A southeast Houston man was killed in front of his home by a stray bullet right after midnight New Years Day, according to the Houston Police Department.
The victim Javier Rivera, 43, was watching fireworks with his wife in their front yard in the 800 block of Eastlake Street at Theta near Edgebrook Drive, HPD reported.
“Mr. Rivera and family members had gathered to celebrate New Year’s eve at their residence at the above address,” Detectives believe someone shot a gun in the air in celebration of the New Year and the bullet came down and hit Rivera in the head. “At midnight, Rivera and his wife stepped outside and walked to the edge of the driveway to watch nearby fireworks. No one in the immediate area was launching fireworks. As he stood next to his wife, Rivera suddenly fell to the ground. Neighbors called 9-1-1 and attempted to provide medical assistance to Rivera. HFD paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Rivera deceased.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the HPD’s Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
