The Houston Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident at 3400 South Freeway (State Highway 288 South) about 2:20 a.m. on Sunday.
The identity of the male victim, 29, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
“The victim was driving a black Toyota Camry northbound on the South Freeway when he failed to drive in a single lane and struck a steel retainer wall at a high rate of speed,” HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Ross and Officer T. Tran reported. “Heavy steel debris from both the vehicle and the retaining wall was then projected onto the northbound lanes, striking a white Toyota Corolla, also traveling north on the freeway.”
The driver of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Corolla was transported to Memorial Herman Hospital in serious condition.
