Suspected drunk-driver dies in wreck on North Freeway, injures two

A suspected drunk-driver died in a wreck tonight after losing control of his pickup45 on the North Freeway, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The male victim, Candido Alvarez, was speeding and swerving in his 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck when concerned motorists began following him, HCSO Deputy M. A. Smith reported. At about 9:45 p.m., Alvarez struck another vehicle in the 23000 block of Interstate 45 and wrecked into a concrete wall.

“Witnesses following the Ford advised [Alvarez] was unable to drive in a single lane of traffic and appeared to be intoxicated,” Smith reported. “[Alvarez] lost control of his pickup and struck the outside concrete retaining wall, which caused the Ford to roll over onto its left side. After rolling several times, [James] who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died on scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The Ford also struck the rear of a 1999 Nissan Quest van, which lost control after impact and struck the inside concrete retaining wall.”

According to HCSO, two people in the Nissan were taken to Houston Northwest Medical Center and are in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation by HCSO’s Traffic Enforcement Division.
