Deputy helps driver in fallen big rig

While traveling north on the Eastex Freeway on her way to a meeting, on Sept. 10, Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy and Military Liaison Ruth Recio witnessed the unimaginable happen – a big rig truck falling on to the freeway, within 20 feet in front of her, from the over pass above.

It took a few moments for her to realize the magnitude of what just occurred after the dust began to settle. Upon seeing the wreckage, Dep. Recio jumped out of her car knowing someone was possibly trapped in the cab of the truck.

“I don’t really think about all the worries about what is going to happen,” she said. “I just think there is a person in there and I have to help”

For the next several minutes, Dep. Recio tried to rescue the driver from the cab but was unable to do so.

She stood by, offering the trapped driver reassurance while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

“I just motivated him to hang on just a little while longer,” Dep. Recio said. “I knew at that moment there was nothing more that I could do for him, just hold his hand and pray for him.”

The Houston Fire Department arrived on the scene and firefighters were able to rescue the driver of the truck. He survived.
