Cypress teen dies in 4-wheeler wreck

One teenager was killed and another injured early this morning after driving a 4-wheeler off the road in Cypress, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Fredrick Cothren, 17, and a 14-year-old passenger were traveling northbound on a 1995 Polaris ATV in the 12600 block of Maxwell Road. Cothren failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and his 4-wheeler struck a ditch embankment on the east side of the road.
“The impact ejected Cothren and his 14-year-old male passenger from the 4-wheeler. Neither Cothren nor the juvenile were wearing a helmet at the time of the crash,” Deputy M. Nguyen reported. “As a result of being ejected, Cothren’s head struck a tree next to where the 4-wheeler came to rest on its side. Cothren died from the injuries he sustained as a result of this crash after being transported to North Cypress Medical Center. The 14-year-old juvenile was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.”
The case remains open and under investigation by HCSO’s Traffic Enforcement Division.
